Roles and responsibilities

In June 2007, 133 SPVM officers were assigned to work directly in Montréal’s public transit system.

They work in the metros and neighbouring areas to ensure the safety of the transit users and merchants.

Their mandate includes reducing the frequency of alarming and antisocial behaviour, to ensure the peace of mind of all citizens.

Flow of the network

The officers enforce existing laws and regulations. They also work to ensure the smooth flow of the transit network by taking action against antisocial behaviour that delays arrivals and departures of the subway trains.

Task of the officers in the metro

The officers who patrol the metro do the same job as officers who work out of neighbourhood police stations. That means they have access to all of the SPVM’s specialized, technical and support services to facilitate their operations in the field.

The Section métro de Montréal officers should not be confused with the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) surveillance agents: the former are SPVM officers and the latter are security agents hired by the STM. They each have their own important but complementary role to play, and each answers to a different authority and functions through a different system.

Citizens should not hesitate to turn to a Section métro officer for any matter that would ordinarily be handled by the police.
