Discover the work of a police cadet

The police cadet provides support to police operations, in particular, sporting, cultural and public events. The police cadet has various responsibilities:

  • Conduct preventive patrol on foot and on bike (provide SPVM presence)
  • Control peaceful crowds, redirect traffic and providing information to the public
  • Participate in crime prevention campaigns
  • Issue parking tickets
  • Monitor visitors
  • Participate in the application of specific local prevention programs (distribution of leaflets, issuance of courtesy tickets and chiselling)
  • Pass information about prevention programs for the community
  • Be assigned to the reporting of complaints
  • Contribute to the Info-crime program by writing various documents
  • Carry out activities related to surveillance videos

The police cadet program was put in place in 1992. The program's objective is to allow students thinking about a career in policing to gain relevant work experience in the area. As well, it allows students to see if they are comfortable carrying out police duties.

It also provides students of all educational fields with practical experience in the field, stimulating challenges and a clear advantage in their job search.

To prepare for the police cadet function, the SPVM will provide you with paid training that will take 45 hours. The department will provide you with uniforms and necessary equipment to carry out the duties.

You can work full-time as a police cadet in the summer. However, outside of the summertime, police cadets only work on certain local prevention program and at mandatory events, such as the Saint Patrick day parade, the Montréal Marathon, the Santa Claus parade, etc.

Compensation

The hourly wage (2020) for a police cadet is $15,96 (plus the city premium: $17,04)

Police cadets are compensated time-and-a-half if they work more than:

  • 12 hours over a 24-hour period
  • 40 hours a week

Selection criteria

To become a police cadet, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Enrolled in policing techniques*
  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Satisfy the requirements of a security and integrity check
  • Have a functional knowledge of French and working knowledge of English
  • Have considerable work or volunteering experience (at least one year)
  • Be prepared to work on stand-by duty an average of 35 hours a week (days, evenings, nights with a few exceptions, weekdays and weekends), from the beginning of June until the end of August

* If there are too few policing techniques candidates, we accept applications from anyone enrolled in Cégep or university or with a DEC or university diploma.

New : Police cadets who stand out for the quality of their work with the SPVM will be given priority in the selection process and hired more quickly as neighbourhood police officers.

Selection process

In addition to meeting the selection criteria, you will also have to pass the orther steps in the selection process. All the steps are eliminatory.

1 - INTERVIEW

2 - SECURITY AND INTEGRITY CHECK

3- TRAINING

We look forward to meeting you.
