Theft at the Automatic Teller (ATM)

Advice

  • Choose an automatic teller in a busy, well-lit area
  • If you feel you are being watched, come back later
  • Memorize your personal identification number (PIN) – do not write it down anywhere
  • Protect your PIN during your transaction
  • Take your money quickly, without counting it – you can count it later, in a safe place
  • Do not accept any help carrying out your transactions
  • Do not throw away your ATM receipts in publicly accessible garbage bins, because they contain personal information

If you are robbed:

  • Do not resist – you could be hurt
  • Call 911 immediately and describe the robber and the robber's escape route
  • If your credit cards are also stolen, advise the issuing companies immediately
