Q1. Why is it necessary to have an email address?

An email address is required to do an online report, because all communications are done by email.

Q2. If I am not able to complete my report online, what do I do?

You can call 514-280-2222 (call centre non-emergency line). An employee will be able to help you in filing report by phone or suggest that you go to your local police station.

Q3. If I don't know the exact time of the incident, can I still complete a report online?

Yes. We ask for an approximate timeframe when the incident took place (such as between 8 pm and 7 am) as well as the date.

Q4. If I don't know the exact location of the incident, can I still complete a report online?

Yes. You will need to know the intersection, name of the public or commercial place where the incident took place (e.g., Carrefour Angrignon (commercial),La Ronde(public place) or Newman/Lapierre (intersection)).

Q5. Do I need to contact my insurance company?

You are not required to do so, but once you submit your report, you will be given a temporary number. Then, once the report is approved, you will receive a permanent event number that you may provide for your insurance.

Q6. What is the process to follow if I want a copy of my report?

Once your report is approved, you will receive a notification by email and a PDF copy of the incident report will be automatically attached.

To view your report, the ADOBE READER software must be installed on your computer. If you do not have this software, click here to install it.

Q7. Once my report is sent, can I make changes or additions?

Once it is sent, there are two ways to change your report:

  • By contacting an employee at the telephone number indicated in the confirmation email you received
  • By clicking on the link in the email sent to you by a reviewing officer for a change request

Q8. If a vehicle is involved in the incident, what information needs to be entered in the report (accidents or hit-and-runs are not eligible)?

The information required to complete an online report involving a vehicle are:

  • licence plate number
  • Serial number
  • Make, model and year
  • Number of doors (2, 4 or 5)
  • Vehicle value ($)
  • Owner's contact information
  • Insurance company and policy number
  • Amount of damages to the car (can be an approximate)

Q9. What happens if i do not know the exact amount of the damages incurred to my property?

You can enter an approximate amount for the damages in the "damaged value" field.

Q10. Why is it important to include the serial numbers of items in my report?

The serial number of a lost or stolen item allows to link the item, if found, to the individual who reported it lost or stolen.

Q11. Can there be more than one complainant in the same report?

No. For this type of event, please contact 911.

Q12. What do I do if my identification cards were stolen and I am concerned about being a victim of fraud?

You can contact Equifax or Trans-Union. These two companies specialize in credit files. You should also contact your financial and banking institutions.

Q13. What is the definition of a suspect?

A suspect is the perpetrator of a crime witnessed by you or by a witness, and this person is known or can be clearly described.

As well, when part of all of a licence plate number can be provided, this is a suspicious vehicle.

Q14. What is a witness?

This is a person who saw a suspect commit the crime and who is able to clearly describe him/her or can recognize the perpetrator of this crime.

Q15. How much time do I have to report an incident?

It is best to report the incident as soon as possible, even if there is no specific timeframe.
