Speeding

According to Société d'assurance automobile du Québec data, speeding is one of the two main causes of accidents in Québec, along with drunk driving.

The SPVM sets up various measures to protect the users of Montréal's highway network. The officers focus particular attention on speeding through school zones, parks and other places considered to be problematic. 

Infractions and penalties

Here are the sanctions a driver will face when caught exceeding posted speed limits.

To these fines also have general and administration fees established according to the fine, as well as an obligatory contribution of $10 to the Programme d'aide aux victimes d'actes criminels (PAVAC). (Subject to modifications.)

* Since April 1st, 2008, this amount is doubled when the driver is declared guilty of excessive speed. In the case that a driver is found guilty of excessive speed 3 times or more during the 10  years following the establishment of this regulation, the amount of the fine is tripled.
