Young people
In Quebec, 2006, 32.4% of the drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 years who were stopped had alcohol in their blood. The majority of these young drivers have been banned from driving with alcohol in their systems.
In order to prevent young drivers from driving under the influence of alcohol, the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal carries out public awareness activities, mainly for secondary 5 students during the Graduation period. These meetings are an opportunity for socio-community agents of the various district stations to tackle different issues:
The video of the song Untitled, by Montréal's world famous band Simple Plan, is also presented to youth now that the SPVM has obtained the rights to it. This video clip, illustrating the life of a family devastated by the death of one of its members, was selected because it sends a strong message via a musical group that young people can identify with.
Other awareness activities
The agents of the SPVM also organize activities to raise awareness among drivers of all ages, informing them of the effects and consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol. They primarily set up information stands on driving under the influence in Montréal companies and at conferences (Visez droit (Aim right) of the Montréal Bar, Police Week, etc.).
