Mission and values

Mission

The mission of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) is to protect the lives and property of the citizens, to maintain peace and public security, to prevent and combat crime, and to uphold the prevailing laws and regulations (articles 48 and 69 of the Police Act, R.S.Q. c. P-13.1).

In partnership with the institutions, socio-economic organizations, community groups and citizens of the territory of Montréal, the SPVM seeks to enhance the citizens' quality of life by:

  • working to reduce crime,
  • increasing road safety,
  • improving their sense of security,
  • developping a peaceful and safe environment, while upholding the rights and freedoms guaranteed under the Québec and Canadian charters of rights.

In 2011, the Service de police dela Villede Montréal established the foundation which, in the years ahead, will allow the neighbourhood police to fully embody its potential: as an agile, effective, transparent police service that engages in its community in order to serve it better. A police service where every action is rooted in a shared vision that it strives to bring to life every day.

The SPVM in ITS community:

Public security is a necessity that relies on collective will and responsibility that is shared among all the stakeholders in our community.

Concerted action for social peace, an increased sense of public security and a better community life for everyone.

Vision

"At the SPVM, we each invest a lot in our community, and it shows".

Values

The SPVM executive and personnel are united around three fundamental values rooted in the SPVM's mission and drawing on its vision.

  • Respect

Respect means behaving and treating others with consideration and dignity and remaining open to differences.

Respect underscores all our interactions with citizens, partners and the community, and all our relations with employees, colleagues and superiors. In daily work situations, SPVM employees are as respectful and open to others as they are to members of their own families.

  • Integrity

Integrity is the quality of someone who exercises their profession with rectitude, honesty and fairness.

The citizens' trust and respect toward the SPVM depend on the integrity of all our employees.

  • Commitment

Commitment means being wholly dedicated to the organization's mission and taking personal responsibility for all involved roles and duties.

The SPVM personnel set forth to accomplish their task, taking on the issues in the environment and working together to resolve them.
