PDQ 33 - Advice to parents for a safe new school year

September 7, 2011, 10:00 AM

At the beginning of the 2011-2012 new school year, the policemen and policewomen will be present around schools in order to make sure that your children can start the new school year in safety. Here's what you can do to help:

If your child has to go to school on foot, it is recommended that parents, with their children, take the route their children will have to borrow daily, and this, for the reasons listed below:

Teach them to obey all road safety rules:

  • In order to go to school, take the school corridor and walk across the streets at intersections with the help of school crossing-guards who are there to ensure your safety. Otherwise, go to the nearest intersection in order to cross the street;
  • Walk on the sidewalk;
  • Observe the traffic;
  • Make sure you are seen before crossing;
  • Show your children how to look left, right and then left again before walking across the street;
  • Establish eye contact with drivers to make sure they see you;
  • At intersections controlled by traffic lights, obey the pedestrian lights; if there are traffic lights only, you have the right of way at the green light;
  • You could also teach them how to recognize authority figures such as policemen, firefighters and school crossing guards.

Know which route your child takes to go to school

You’ll know which route they take and you'll know exactly where your children are should you wish to join them for one reason or another.

It’s also essential to make sure children understand the importance of not talking to a stranger or following them.

With regard to children who take the school bus:

Parents of the youngest children must show them where their bus stop is located. Parents are responsible for their child up to the point where the child gets on the school bus and, on the way back, as soon as the child gets off the bus.

Be careful out there and happy new school year 2011-2012!
