Recently, we received information about several cases of fraudulent telemarketing on the territory of the Service de police dela Villede Montreal (SPVM). It involves individuals who generally use the same strategy to obtain money from seniors.
Specifically, these individuals call their victims and introduce themselves as being a friend of one of their family members. They then tell their victims that one of their family members was involved in an accident or arrested, and needs money to get out of trouble. The amount of money required varies between 1000$ and 5000$. They then mention to the victim that somebody will come to retrieve the money or ask them to do a bank transfer or send it viaWestern Union.
If someone attempts this kind of fraud with you or somebody you know, report this immediately to your local Neighbourhood Police Station. This will help us gather information that will make it possible to arrest the suspect(s).
We also strongly suggest to avoid doing surveys or giving out personal information to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of fraud. If you have any questions, you can always contact your Neighbourhood Police Station 12 at 514-280-0112.
