iPhone thieves pose trick question: ’Do you have the time?’

March 30, 2012, 3:47 PM

After a rash of thefts, police are warning iPhone users to be wary of strangers who come up to them and ask for the time or to borrow the use of their phone.

Montreal police community relations officer Pierre Fauchier at Station7 inSt. Laurent said three iPhone thefts were reported last week in his territory alone.

"It happens so fast, it has been hard to make arrests," said Fauchier, noting police are now turning their focus to prevention. Making matters worse: "Nobody has a watch any more."

"When someone asks ‘Do you have the time?’ and you pull out an iPhone, you can be caught off guard," Fauchier advised. "If you are using your iPhone, be discrete." The newer iPhone 4S is especially hot.

Although the problem has been seen across Montreal Island over the past few months, Fauchier said, many of the thefts in St. Laurent have been happening in and around the Côte-Vertu métro station on Côte-Vertu Blvd.
