Police are warning people to be careful when stopped on the street for directions after two recent incidents in the borough, one February 6 and the other February 9. In both cases, wallets were stolen from women’s handbags, said Montreal police community relations officer Pierre Fauchier at Station 7 in St. Laurent.
In both of the incidents, Fauchier said, the women were approached by a suspect, who asked for directions while it appears a second suspect came up behind them and managed to steal wallets from their handbags while they were distracted. One of the incidents took place in the 1100 block of Décarie Blvd. while the second incident took place on Marcel Laurin Blvd.
Last fall, several similar thefts took place in shopping mall parking lots in Pointe Claire and Dorval. In those cases, one suspect would pull out a road map and ask for directions in order to distract the victim while a second suspect was stealing their wallet. Those crimes lead to the arrest of several suspects.
