Le parent, un allié essentielThe "The parent, an essential Ally" program was established in 2004 by SPVM officers to support parents in the Haitian community and provide them with information about the services offered by the SPVM and our partners.

Although the program was initially designed for Haitian parents and first rolled out at PDQs 39, 40, 42 and 45, it was quickly adapted to meet the needs of parents from other cultural communities in Montréal who were also worried about their children's well-being. Other neighbourhood stations got involved and began offering the program as well.

Since 2005, over 55 information sessions have been held in 21 churches and community groups, and over 4,176 parents, youth and community leaders have met with community relations officers and representatives from neighbourhood CLSCs, the Youth Protection Directorate and the Centre jeunesse de Montréal.

Inspired by "Ma famille, un trésor à preserver" (my family, a treasure to protect), a project created in 2001 by the officers at PDQ 45, the program offers:

1 meeting with the parents, with the following objectives:

tell them more about the services offered by the SPVM, the CLSCs, the Youth Protection Directorate and the Centre jeunesse de Montréal

get them to talk about the problems they are having with their teens, their perception of their role as parents and their view of the Quebec and Canadian justice systems

1 meeting with teens aged 12 to 18, with the following objectives:

give them the same information given to the parents about the services offered by the various organizations

get them to talk about the problems they are having with their parents

1 meeting with the parents and the teens, with the following objectives:

promote communication  and establish an agreement zone between them

answer questions from the parents and the teens, using examples or excerpts from laws to clarify differences of opinion

All of the community relations officers in all 33 neighbourhood stations on the island of Montréal have been trained to give the "Parents - Essential Allies" workshops.
