Being part of a "gang" is a normal part of growing up, because it meets a child's need to belong. Kids need to be surrounded by friend to make it through tough times and share the good times and happiness. But it's important to know the difference between good friends and bad friends.
respect each other and respect others
get together to have fun, talk, help each other, etc.
don't use violence and don't seek confrontation with other kids
don't take advantage of others to earn power and money
want power and money and will do anything to get it
break the law and take advantage of others to get what they want
get together to defend themselves and confront other kids
commit crimes, sometimes very violent ones

In 2007 the SPVM held a cartoon contest called "Choosing the right friends!" 3,000 sixth-grade students from 67 public and private English- and French-language schools from the island of Montréal took part, with the help of 27 participating neighbourhood stations.
The team from the École de la Mosaïque in Côte-Saint-Luc won first prize in the contest. The cartoon was created by Nadia Saritsky, Katia Gorshkova, Kimberly Calliste and Ana Ismachowiez.
We courage you to view all ten of the finalists from this very colourful contest. Congratulations everyone!
