Myths and realities of being a cop

 Q. Is it true that there's a minimum height to be accepted?

A. No. There is no minimum height, because that would be discriminatory under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Those old hiring standards have been replaced by a physical aptitude test.

Q. Is it true that I can't wear glasses?

A. No, it's false. As long as you meet the vision standard with and without correction, as stipulated in the Police Act, wearing glasses or contact lenses isn't a problem.

Vision standard:

  • 20/40 better eye, corrected to 20/20
  • 20/100 other eye, corrected to 20/30

Q. Is it true that I have to be in very good shape?

A. Yes. In work situations, police officers have to be in shape in order to protect the security of the public, their colleagues, and themselves. The physical aptitude test includes cardio-vascular and muscular segments. If you want to be a cop, you better start training now!
