During our "Back to School 2010" campaign, officers from the various neighbourhood stations, working with traffic officers from the Division de la sécurité routière et de la circulation and parking officers, will remind parents and drivers about the kinds of safe behaviour that can protect children in school neighbourhoods and around school buses.
The officers will stop drivers who behave aggressively or dangerously by not respecting speed limits or Highway Safety Code rules in school zones.
The campaign is also an opportunity to promote safety among the children, by encouraging them to use school corridors and to cross at intersections where there is a crossing guard.
How can adults contribute to school children's road safety awareness?
As parents, crossing guards, school bus drivers, teachers and police officers, we should explain to children how to behave safely when they are walking, biking or taking the school bus.
As adults, it is our responsibility to protect our children - and all children - by demonstrating exemplary behaviour at the wheel and on the street, especially in areas where there are lots of children around.
In fact, parents should be doubly careful, as they are likely to be driving frequently in school zones as they pick up and drop off their children. Parents must stay especially alert to ensure that driving around the school does not become so routine that they begin to bend the safety rules in their hurry to get to school on time or rush home.
Road safety report on accidents involving children
In Montréal in 2009, no children aged 5 to 12 were killed in car accidents on school days, but one child was seriously injured and 55 were slightly injured, the same number as in 2008. According to our analysis, accidents leading to serious injuries for school children occur mostly when the children cross between intersections.
That confirms the need for us to maintain our vigilance in the back to school period by holding awareness and control activities to improve student safety around schools and all across the road network.
