On August 25 and 26, 2012, the Mondial de soccer de Montréal took place in parc Jarry, wrapping up the summer soccer season for the youth in 12 neighbourhood SPVM stations.
The some 500 young participants were excited to welcome honorary president Marc Parent, chief of the SPVM, to the event. In his address, Mr. Parent expressed his pleasure at seeing such a great turnout and thanked all the volunteers and police officers in attendance.
As soon as the opening ceremony wrapped up, the soccer matches got underway. The two days of finals sparked a level of enthusiasm and intensity worthy of a real World Cup.
The big winners of the weekend event were, in the girls’ division, PDQ 10 (Bordeaux-Cartierville), representing France; in the boys’ 12-14 division, PDQ 26 (Côte-des-Neiges), representing Portugal; and in the boys’ 15-17 and men’s 18-25 divisions, PDQ 33 (Parc-Extension), representing Greece.
This colourful, friendly, feel-good event attracted a record number of participants this year, demonstrating the value of a community activity that combines optimism, effort, sharing and challenge.
The members of the organizing committee – Éric LaPenna, Judy Yankowski, Pierre Fauchier, André Belotte, Dominique Théosmy and Maurice Casaubon – extend their warm thanks to Info-crime, Québec en forme, Pepsi Cola, Moisson Montréal and Sportira for their invaluable contributions.
