Montréal, October 29 th, 2007 - The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) is co-hosting an International Conference on Street Gangs, in collaboration with the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) and the Toronto Police Service, at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montréal, from today until October 31.

Working under the theme "From Prevention to Intervention: An Appeal for the Integrated, Concerted Approach to Street Gangs," the congress is attended by participants from all across Canada, the United States, Europe and Central America. The meeting is an opportunity for parties interested in this major issue - from communities, universities, police services, various levels of government community, and the penal justice system - to discuss and debate the best ways to counter the street gang phenomenon.

"Street gangs are a reality worldwide, and that's why it is so important to pool our energies and foster international cooperation between police bodies and government agencies," explained Steven Chabot, the new CACP president.

SPVM director Yvan Delorme remarked that an "integrated approach involving all players concerned by this phenomenon will be at the heart of all our discussions throughout the conference."

"This week gives us an excellent opportunity to explore the options for strengthening our ties around this issue and sharing our methods and expertise on the topic," added Toronto Police Chief William Blair.
