Protect yourself against fraud

09 december 2015

In recent weeks, a number of residents have received calls at home from someone claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency or Immigration Canada. The caller may convincingly claim that the victim owes money for back taxes or that something is wrong with his Canadian status. The caller may then require that money be transferred immediately, failing which the police will be sent to arrest the victim.

Do not be taken in by this scare tactic, it’s a scam.

  • If you have already sent a cheque or transferred funds, contact the financial institution handling the transaction to cancel it.
  • If you have been the victim of an identity theft, get in touch with credit agencies such as Equifax (1-800-465-7166) or TransUnion Canada (1-866-525-0262) to have a fraud alert put in your file.
  • Remember to report all fraud to your local police station.
