Citizen relations policy

Politique de relations avec les citoyensRelations with the public are at the forefront of the actions of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), as dictated by its mission, values and the principles of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Québec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms.

That's why your police service is always listening to the public and embracing actions and projects that clarify the public's concerns, with a view to providing better service. For this, the SPVM relies on the professionalism and commitment of its entire staff, as well as the engagement and involvement of its partners and the public as co-creators of public security.

Vision

The SPVM is committed to maintaining and strengthening harmonious relationships with the residents of Montréal, to keep our city safe. The skills of the police personnel, the knowledge of key police stakeholders and the SPVM's provision of service all take into account the needs and realities of the local communities while upholding and enforcing current laws and bylaws.

Definition

Citizen relations can be defined as any action that seeks to meet the expectations of Montrealers and satisfy their security needs, in order to provide a safe, peaceful living environment. And, guided by the SPVM's values, these actions help reinforce the public's sense of security and maintain bonds of trust with the city's residents. They also take advantage of the expertise of residents and partners to identify and implement lasting public security solutions, within our respective fields of competency.

Roles and responsibilities

The SPVM has made a commitment to keeping the public's sense of security at the highest possible level, so that Montrealers feel safe everywhere in the Ville de Montréal territory. To fulfil their role and responsibilities, the police and civilian staff must demonstrate professionalism, openness, innovation, a sense of ethics, respect and sensitivity toward the public at all times.
