Motor vehicle

Stolen carsVehicles are stolen for a variety reasons: to salvage parts, for joyriding, to sell them abroad, etc.  An individual is stealing a vehicle if she/he takes it with the intention to deprive the owner of it either temporarily or permanently.

If you are witness to your vehicle being stolen, dial 9-1-1 immediately. Describe the vehicle, the thief and the direction the robber went in. If you are not witness to the robbery, call 9-1-1 so that a police officer can write a report.

Ways to prevent vehicle theft

  • Park your vehicle in a well lit area.
  • Always lock the doors and close the windows, even if you leave your vehicle for just a few moments; i.e. to pay at a gas station.
  • Do not leave your keys with people you don't know (valet, parking employee, etc)
  • Engrave ID into the windows and major pieces of your vehicle.
  • To prevent theft at your residence, do not leave any documents with your address in your vehicle.

Theft from a vehicule

A theft from a vehicle is when someone steals something from someone's car, whether or not they damage the car in the process.

Bags, compact discs and laptop computers left on the seats are an invitation to thieves. A few seconds is all they need to get away with your belongings.

  • Never leave anything in sight in your car.
  • If you have a laptop, get a cable lock that lets you lock it into your trunk.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Always lock your doors and close your windows.
  • Put your belongings in the trunk before you get to your destination.
  • If you are robbed, call 9-1-1 immediately. If you witness the theft, describe the thief and the thief's escape route.
