This section provides instructions and advice on preventing personal assault. Personal assault is an offence that is punishable by law. An assault may take the form of:

Montréal CAVAC - Crime victims assistance centre

The free, confidential professional services offered by the CAVAC (crime victims assistance centre) are for people who have fallen victim to criminal actions, for their friends and family, and for witnesses to crime. CAVAC provides assistance whether or not the perpetrators of the crime have been identified, arrested, charged or found guilty.

The CAVAC provides crime victims with tools to help them regain their confidence and take control of their lives as quickly as possible. The services offered by CAVAC include:

  • Telephone consultation
  • Screening, comfort and moral support
  • Intervention in post-traumatic stress situations
  • Information on the steps of the legal process
  • Information on legal proceedings and decisions rendered by judges (CAVAC INFO program)
  • Information on victim's rights and recourse, especially in terms of compensation
  • Identification of specialized community resources
  • Coaching for the victim in these processes

These services are offered in French, English and Spanish.
