Since April 1^st, 2008, it is illegal to drive a road vehicle while using any hand held device equipped with a functioning telephone.

This prohibition does not apply to the driver of an emergency vehicle in the exercise of its functions.

Just the simple act of driving with a device in your hands constitutes a violation liable for a fine of $115 and 3 demerit points. As of January 22^nd, 2009, the SPVM has issued more than 6800 tickets for this violation!

Here are two recommendations to use your telephone legally and safel

• Park your vehicle in a safe location, or, at an entry or an exit of a highway in the event of an emergency;
• Use a hands free device.

Hands free, busy head...

Even if the device is equipped with a "Hands free" function, they remain a source of distraction for the driver and are likely to cause accidents which could have been avoided.

Always keep your hands on the wheel, your eyes on the road, and your attention on driving.
