When there are crosswalk lights for pedestrians and traffic lights...

You must respect pedestrian signals:

• Cross the street between the two parallel and continuous white lines, or through the white bands.
• When the hand flashes, there is very little time left to cross. If you are already moving through, speed up! Otherwhise, wait for the appearance of the white figure.
• However, if the flashing hand has a numeric countdown, a pedestrian can cross only if he is able to reach the other side before the hand goes solid.
• If the hand is solid, do not cross.

If there are only traffic lights...

You have the right of way on a green light and priority for the crosswalk.

If there are Stop signs...

You have the right of way and drivers must stop their vehicles to let you pass.

Pedestrian crosswalks

Pedestrian crosswalks are used to indicate to drivers and others where people must cross the street. There are 2 distinct types of crosswalks: those at intersections and those between intersections.

When approaching traffic is controlled by STOP signs or traffic lights at an intersection, the crosswalk is bordered by two parallel and continuous white lines, or by diagonal white stripes.

The yellow markings outline the crosswalk at intersections where there are no traffic lights or STOP signs.

Anywhere else, the crosswalk must be indicated by yellow bands, with suitable signage for pedestrians.

Signs are installed at the following places:

• between intersections;
• at intersections not controlled by traffic lights ;
• at intersections without traffic lights, but controlled by STOP signs.
