Role of the marine patrol officer

Module nautiqueThe marine patrol officer must ensure the safety on Montréal's water ways 12 months per year. They enforce the Criminal Code, certain provincial laws and municipal by-laws.

Their mandate arises from the of 2001, which authorizes the unit to approach and inspect boats, to carry out targeted operations, and to give out violation tickets.

The territory is divided into three patrol sectors:

  • St-Louis lake and the Lachine channel (68-171);
  • St-Laurence river and the eastern part of the Rivière des Prairies (68-172);
  • Deux Montagnes Lake and the western part of the Rivière des Prairies (68-173).

In summer, marine patrol officers inspect boats and engage in specific lawful operations in answer to any complaints received from the District Stations. They carry out patrols and answer calls with the maritime environment in mind.

In autumn, they also see to the respect of the regulations on the use of firearms in hunting season.

In winter there are just sporadic patrols.
