November 14, 2007 - A little over a decade after introducing the neighbourhood police, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) is undertaking a major overhaul of its operating model with the service coverage plan project. In the coming years, the SPVM will continue to improve its service to the public by relying on the proven success of the neighbourhood police and innovating to further improve the model.
The aim of this new generation of the neighbourhood police is to enable the SPVM to stay ahead of the game and act on priorities set out to deal with the evolution of society and new needs expressed by the public. The overhaul of our mode of operation has allowed us to make a few observations that are the basis for the service coverage plan:
An integrated approach
Strength, autonomy and the implementation of an integrated approach are the major issues that the service coverage plan will address. The SPVM's strength has been its ability to quickly evolve to keep up with the rapid changes experienced by the agglomeration of Montréal over the last decade.
The plan thus proposes changes in three complimentary areas:
High degree of unanimity
It should be noted that the service coverage plan project and the vision it proposes have received positive comments wherever it has been presented:
It is rare to see a project of this scope receive such wide approval.
