It’s already time to head back to school after a beautiful summer.
This year, like every year, the SPVM is calling on drivers to be careful, especially in school zones and crossing areas. Please keep your eyes open and obey traffic signals, because the kids are excited when they come back from vacation and they do not necessarily have safety in mind.
The return to class also means that school buses are back on the roads. Once again, it’s important to be careful. Remember that it is prohibited to pass a school bus in any direction when its lights are flashing. For obvious safety reasons, it is also important to respect the bus drop-off zones in front of schools.
The police are taking this opportunity to remind parents and drivers of the importance of obeying the Highway Safety Code and behaving safely to protect students around our schools.
A few statistics
In Montréal, during the 2011 school year, no children between the ages of 5 and 12 died in traffic fatalities. The number of minor injuries also dropped significantly, from 51 in 2010 to 41 in 2011. Unfortunately, there were two serious injuries, one more than in 2010.
