For 5 years, Police Officers of the SPVM have carried out two road safety campaigns addressed to pedestrians. This year, Police Officers will pay special attention to the elderly, because they are a population at risk.
Did you know that...
There is often an impression that it is children who are more at risk, but the road safety assessment indicates the opposite. As we grow older, reflexes are slowed, we move with more difficulty and our sight is sometimes less sharp.
There are also our old habits and impatient, speeding car drivers racing down streets.
Everyone knows that a pedestrian will lose against a car or a truck. Before crossing an intersection, you must always be sure that drivers have seen you clearly by establishing visual contact with them.
Never take it for granted that they saw you!
Prevention and suppression operations
Police Officers will be explaining road safety in order to bring awareness to elderly centres throughout the island of Montreal.
They will also organize Police operations in order to sensitize pedestrians, but will hand out tickets when the public do not respect indication.
And of course, we won't forget about the drivers!
Our objective is simple; we want road safety assessment to improve as it has over the last 10 years. We want this trend to continue.
