During this time of celebration, the Opération Nez Rouge (Red nose) drive-home service is a practical solution for getting around and making it back home safely. The SPVM strongly encourages drivers to be responsible all year long when they drink, by always having a designated driver or calling a taxi or a friend.
"With Nez Rouge, there is no excuse to take the wheel if you are intoxicated. For the SPVM, Operation Nez Rouge is an essential part of the overall safety plan for citizens celebrating the Holidays responsibly. It is up to each individual to make the right decision and to contact the Operation Nez Rouge for a safe ride home! ", states Mr Jean-Guy Gagnon, Assistant Director of the SPVM.
In 2008, SPVM police officers organized 190 road checks for intoxicated drivers and so far through 2009, 139 have been carried out. In these past two years, 45,735 drivers were stopped by the police and 108 failed the Breathalyser test.
In addition, 2008 saw 178 arrests for driving under the influence carried out in December, while Operation Nez Rouge was in operation.
